Gay hookup apps and sites have made it easier than ever to meet people for dates, chats and gay sex meets<\/a>. They can be joyful, affirming spaces where you find community, confidence and genuine connection. But they can also reflect the worst of wider culture: racism, fatphobia, transphobia, femmephobia, HIV stigma, ableism, ageism and relentless body shaming.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve spent any time scrolling profiles, you\u2019ll have seen it: \u201cno fats, no fems\u201d, \u201cno Asians\u201d, \u201cBBC only\u201d, \u201cstraight-acting only\u201d, \u201cclean only\u201d, \u201cmasc only\u201d, or a bio that reads like a list of people who are not welcome. Some write it off as \u201cjust a preference\u201d. Others absorb it as a message that they\u2019re undesirable or unsafe. Either way, it harms real people, and it drags the whole scene down.<\/p>\n

Doing better doesn\u2019t mean policing attraction. It means being honest without being cruel, and treating other gay men (and queer people generally) as humans rather than categories to filter out.<\/p>\n

Why exclusionary language is so common (and why it sticks)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hookup culture can reward snap judgements. When everyone\u2019s presented as a grid of photos, \u201cefficiency\u201d starts to feel normal: shorthand, labels, quick yes\/no decisions. That environment can make people think they\u2019re entitled to broadcast their biases as if they\u2019re neutral facts.<\/p>\n

But racial stereotypes and body shaming are not harmless shortcuts. They\u2019re built on power: who gets seen as desirable, who gets treated as disposable, and who is expected to put up with disrespect just to participate. Even if you don\u2019t intend harm, certain phrases land with decades of baggage behind them.<\/p>\n

It also becomes a feedback loop. People see \u201cno X\u201d lines everywhere and assume it\u2019s acceptable. Platforms may not enforce policies consistently. And the targets of the language end up doing the emotional labour of explaining why it\u2019s damaging \u2014 again and again.<\/p>\n

How racism, fatphobia and shaming show up in profiles<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sometimes it\u2019s overt: a blunt \u201cno Black guys\u201d or \u201cno chubs\u201d. Other times it\u2019s coded: \u201clooking for a certain type\u201d paired with racialised emojis, or \u201cgym-fit only\u201d presented as a moral standard. Then there\u2019s fetishisation: reducing someone to a stereotype (\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to try\u2026\u201d, \u201cyou people are\u2026\u201d, \u201conly into X race\u201d). Fetishising and excluding are two sides of the same coin \u2014 both treat people as objects, not individuals.<\/p>\n

Shaming can be subtle too: backhanded compliments, unsolicited \u201cadvice\u201d, or messages that mock bodies, accents, masculinity, disability or age. Even the classic \u201cnot my type\u201d can be delivered with unnecessary cruelty when a simple non-response or polite decline would do.<\/p>\n

Attraction is personal. But here\u2019s a useful test: are you describing what you\u2019re into, or are you announcing who you don\u2019t want around?<\/p>\n
